Know your Bengaluru

Naganatheshwara Temple which is 1300 years old, is in Begur village, off Hosur Road, 4 km from Bommanahalli junction. The temple was built by the Gangas and extended by the Cholas. A 9th century inscription was discovered here, with the earliest reference to the name Bengaluru. This temple is also known as Panchalingeshwara temple as it has 5 lingas each associated with a different aspect. The temple may lose its original charm due to the addition of 4 new cement concrete Rajagopuras and the inevitable urbanization all around. Much of the Begur lake has already shrunk due to the high rise apartments. Remnants of a circular mud fort and a Jaina Basadi are found near the temple.
