A TRIBUTE TO THE SULTAN

 marking his 265th birth anniversary
Bengaluru TravelTipu Sultan ( 20 Nov 1750 - 4 May 1799), the Tiger of Mysore, continues to intrigue many of us till this day. Irrespective of the controversy over his religious tolerance, what we definitely know is that he was a pioneer in rocket missile technology, his contribution to horticulture and sericulture in Karnataka, his obsession for the tiger-stripe pattern ( Bubri) and his ferocious fight with the British until his death in 1799. After his death, the British deported Tipu's family to Tollygunge, Kolkata. The descendants received meagre or no help due to mismanagement of a trust established to manage the family estates worth millions of dollars today. Less known is the tragic fact that most of Tipu's descendants live in extreme poverty, forced to take up menial jobs like plying rickshaws to make a living.   Read more about Tipu's Fort and Palace in Bengaluru...
