Govardhanagiri Kshetra
in Bengaluru is located in Basavanagudi, one of the oldest neighbourhood of Bengaluru. Dedicated by Dr.Nalini Rao in memory of her beloved parents and brother, the temple was inaugurated on 4 March 2004 by Sri Sugunendra Teertha Swamiji, the 30th Peetathipati of Puthige Matha, Udupi. This unique artificial cave temple is built around a pre-existing hill. The exterior is a replication of Govardhanagiri carved out of granite stones. Just after the entrance is a tunnel with shoe racks made of stone. Wheelchair access is provided for those who need. This tunnel leads visitors to the shrine in the main hall. The dimly lit interiors are replication of a cave.
The sanctum has an idol of Lord Krishna lifting the Govardhana hill to protect the villagers from the torrential rains created by an angry Lord Indra. Sufficient space is provided for those who want to meditate. All around the sanctum are freizes carved on the walls of the cave.
The freizes carved on the interior walls of the cave depict several episodes of Krishna Leela. Some of them are :
- Serpent Vasuki protecting Vasudev while crossing the Yamuna river carrying infant Lord Krishna in a basket.
- Annihilation of demoness Puthana
- Young Krishna hiding from Yashoda after stealing butter
- Krishna's companions entering mouth of demon Aghasura who took the form of an enormous serpent
- Krishna who split the beak of demon Bakasura
- Salvation of Trnavrta
- Home of Kuchela, childhood friend of Krishna
- Kalinga Narthana - Krishna dancing on a multi-hooded sepent
- Vishwaroop - Krishna revealing his cosmic form to Arjuna
This temple is a unique destination for spiritual seekers and also for those who want to explore the architecture of an artificial cave temple. Gavi Gangadhareshwara temple, Bull Temple and Ramakrishna Mutt are other places of interest nearby.
