Banashankari Temple

, is located on Kanakapura Road in South Bengaluru. Currently, the temple is under the administration and management of the Muzrai of the Government of Karnataka. The temple became popular and the locality derived its name from the Goddess, to be known as Banashankari. There is another ancient Banashankari Amma temple in Badami.

History

The History of this temple dates back to the year 1915. Basappa Shetty from Cubbonpet a devotee of Banashankari Amma in Badami. Badami was the capital of Chalukya dynasty in the 6th & 7th centuries AD. Banashankari was the family deity of the Pulikeshis, the Chaukya rulers. It is said that a Panchaloha idol was given by a priest in Badami to Basappa Shetty as instructed by the Goddess in their dreams. Sculptors from Devanahalli sculpted the idol of goddess Banashankari. The idol brought from Badami was installed on a Shri Chakra in front of the main deity.

Unique Puja & the Legend

Rahukala Puja is performed every Tuesday, Friday and Sunday. Split lemon peels with oil are used as lamps. According to legend, some married ladies who visited the temple insisted that the priest perform Puja at Rahukala (inauspicious time). They mysteriously vanished after the puja, which prompted the priest to believe they were Goddesses and continued with the ritual.
